Philosophy

HypnoBirthing Childbirth Education philosophy believes feelings of safety allow for a calm birth, that birth is accomplished by the mother and the baby through a natural process that needs no intervention unless there is a threat to the well being of either mother or baby or if the birthing person asks for a specific intervention.  HypnoBirthing values the opportunities of collaborative client centered care, aligns with a “Patient Knows Best” or “Patient Centered Autonomy”, where there is shared decision making, and an understanding that the patient knows their own values, goals, and needs. HypnoBirthing does not judge the choices a birthing person makes for themselves and thier baby. It values the consciousness of the unborn child and the importance the birth experience has on the baby.  HypnoBirthing believes in evidence-based practices and methodologies that can ensure a safe and calm birth environment for the whole family- baby, siblings, partners and mother, empowering families and building a better world.

Lamaze Childbirth Education philosophy believes that  birth is a natural and safe process and values all that is involved in empowering women to trust themselves, their bodies, and the stages and phases of labor and birth.  It values the birthing person being able and supported to make fully informed decisions about their birth.  It stands by evidence based practices to support a positive birth environment, and keeping interventions at a minimum and only when necessary.  It values the bond that develops between baby and mother and all the ways that can be supported.

Bradley Method philosophy is to support the natural progression and outcome of birth through education and nutrition, and partner led birth support/coach. It believes birth is an instinctive process that does not need any interventions.  The Bradley Method values  empowering couples to learn all they need about birth, post natal care, and parenting so they can make informed decisions and have the birth they desire.

Curriculum

HypnoBirthing International Childbirth Education

Hypnobirthing is a prescribed curriculum that follows the same content in every class while easily allowing for individualized modifications to be designed by the instructor based on the group needs and circumstance. HypnoBirthing® is a proven technique that prepares women for a calm and positive birth experience through fear release using self hypnosis. It addresses the psychological and physical well-being of the mother, birth partner, and newborn in any setting—home, hospital, or birth center—through an educational approach to birth preparation.

The curriculum teaches the physiology of instinctive birth, techniques for pain management, relaxation and visualization using self hypnosis, teaches support techniques for birth partners, teaches about how to work with birth hormones, movement and positions for labor.  It covers parent-baby bonding, nutritional guidance, positive body toning, the mind body connection, and how to foster respect and communication between the birthing family and providers. Lamaze Childbirth Education

Lamaze Childbirth Education is an adaptable childbirth preparation model built around six foundational practices for a healthy birth:  1. Let labor begin on its own.  2. Walk, move and change positions during labor.  3. Bring a support person (doula, loved one, friend) for support. 4. Avoid interventions unless medically necessary.  5. Follow the body’s urge to push, and avoid lying on your back.  6. Keep mother and baby together after birth.

Lamaze is not a prescribed curriculum so instructors tailor it to their personal style,  Lamaze focuses on comfort, confidence and informed decision-making by using special breathing techniques, massage, relaxation and bonding tools to support labor and postpartum.  It has evolved from a rigid, breath-focused technique to a more holistic model that emphasizes evidence-based practices.

The Bradley Method

Bradley Method has a structured 12 week curriculum covering multiple parts of childbirth in depth. It is a holistic childbirth course that extends beyond labor and delivery to cover healthy pregnancy, breastfeeding, and early parenting.  It aligns with a natural birthing model, not a medical model. It teaches why it is important  to set up the environment in a manner that offers calm, dim, and quiet, how to use techniques of  breath and relaxation to manage pain, and how to be empowered through being informed and making your own choices for a natural birth.

It prepares the father or partner to provide hands-on, practical support during pregnancy, birth, and the postpartum period, aligning with do-it-yourself and co-parenting approaches. The curriculum emphasizes informed consent and effective communication with healthcare providers, sets realistic expectations for various birth scenarios—including cesarean sections—and encourages trust in natural labor processes.

Hospitals offer a combination of the following class curriculum combinations:  health and nutrition during pregnancy, when to know its time to go to the hospital, early labor, what to expect when labor starts, exercise during pregnancy to support labor preparedness, breathing techniques and massage, labor positions, extensive coverage of pharmaceutical pain relief, medical interventions, partner support, postpartum and newborn care.

Sometimes parts of the above curriculum will be bundled into different classes available at different times that can be signed up for.  Hospitals often offer specialized short classes such as: “Birth Refresher”, “Cesarean Birth”, “Breast Feeding”, “Post Partum Care”.

Often hospital classes are based on the medical model of birth, and will not offer many examples of birth as a physiological process.
